Interferometric SAR Observation of Permafrost Status in the Northern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau by ALOS, ALOS-2 and Sentinel-1 between 2007 and 2021

With global warming, permafrost is undergoing degradation, which may cause thawing subsidence, collapse, and emission of greenhouse gases preserved in previously frozen permafrost, change the local hydrology ecology system, threaten infrastructure indigenous communities. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) world’s largest region middle low latitudes. Permafrost status monitoring QTP great significance to economic development. In this study, we used 66 scenes ALOS data (2007–2009), 73 ALOS-2 (2015–2020) 284 Sentinel-1 (2017–2021) evaluate spatial temporal deformation over 83,000 km2 northern QTP, passing through Tuotuohe, Beiluhe, Wudaoliang Xidatan regions. We use SBAS-InSAR method present a coherence weighted least squares estimator without any hypothetical model calculate long-term velocity (LTDV) maximum seasonal (MSD) prior knowledge. Analysis results shows that LTDV ranged from −20 +20 mm/year during 2007–2009. For results, −30 30 2015–2021. Further study expansion areas subsidence are concentrated on braided stream plains thermokarst lakes. these areas, due glacial erosion, surface runoff river alluvium, contents water ground ice sufficient, could accelerate subsidence. addition, by analyzing MSD for different periods, found L-band more sensitive thermal collapse than C-band sensor detected (LTDV < −10 mm/year) consistent with GF-1/2 dataset. This research indicates InSAR technique be crucial evolution freeze-thaw disasters.
